Overview

Why this course?

The medical literature is constantly evolving and practitioners often find it hard to stay current with best practice guidelines. The shoulder is a complex structure involving four joints, working together to allow multi-planar motion. Consequently, patients who injure their shoulder, need to be closely evaluated as shoulder injuries can involve multiple structures which can impact recovery. Shoulder injuries among an active population are quite common. Studies have illustrated that roughly 15-20% of sports injuries occur to the shoulder. The most common injuries include dislocation, sprains, cartilage, tendon injuries, and fractures.

In order to provide optimal care, clinicians must be familiar with shoulder anatomy and recognize common signs and symptoms of injury. Practitioners should utilize appropriate clinical tests and imaging in order to make the correct diagnosis. Patient care is often difficult as injury can impact pain, function, sleep, daily activity, and sports participation. Treatment often varies between practitioners and is frequently not based on the best available evidence. The use of biologics may benefit some patients, but the proper patient selection and use need to be scrutinized to optimize outcomes. Conservative and surgical treatment options should be weighed and selected based on optimal outcomes. Reinjury rates and limitation of function are still concerning, emphasizing the need for rehabilitation and return to activity should be based on objective criteria and the best evidence.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for primary care and sports medicine physicians, athletic trainers, physician assistants and physical therapists interested in or involved with management of hand and upper extremity injuries.

  • Recognize signs and symptoms of shoulder injury and determine appropriate imaging and care.
  • Choose appropriate candidates and indications for Biologics use.
  • List common clinical findings associated with shoulder instability.

  • Apply rehabilitation and return to play recommendations for optimal shoulder injury care.

Physical Therapists

Method of Participation:

In order to meet the learning objectives and receive continuing education credits, all participants are expected to formally register for the activity, attend the program/watch the webcast and complete an on-line evaluation at the conclusion of the activity. A CE certificate will be emailed to participants upon completion of the on-line evaluation. 

Athletic trainers are required to complete the activity post-test as well. Athletic trainers will be provided their certificates of attendance/EBP Category CEUs upon receipt of their completed evaluation and post-test.
