Football Injury Update – Episode 38: Julio Jones

Dr. Gatt

The Green Bay Packers (12-6) meet the Atlanta Falcons (12-5) on January 22 in the NFC Championship game. Two potential MVP quarterbacks, Aaron Rodgers and Matt Ryan, are on serious winning streaks. While jaws have dropped over the remarkable recent exploits of Green Bay’s Rodgers, the Falcons are hoping to count on offensive stars, such as Julio Jones. Thus far this season, Jones—without much argument, the best wide receiver in the NFL—has averaged 100 receiving yards per game for four consecutive seasons. He’s the first NFL player ever to do so.

However, despite Jones’ claims that he is set to go for the Championship matchup, his ability to play full-strength seems in doubt. Absent from two pre-Championship game-week practices due to a sprained toe, he nevertheless vows he is ready for Sunday. It’s an injury that has plagued him previously this season, most recently causing him to miss weeks 14 and 15.

Dr. Charles J. Gatt, Jr., one of our orthopaedic surgeons and a consultant to a number of sports teams, discusses the nature of Jones’ injury.
