Local compression neuropathy is caused by anything that affects the space available for a specific nerve resulting from masses, trauma, medical conditions, etc. Common symptoms may include numbness and weakness of the hand. Orthopaedic surgeons are responsible for clarifying the site of compression using a physical examination, history, and electrophysiologic testing and furthermore determining the severity of nerve involvement. Once this is completed a treatment can be implemented depending on the severity of the nerve compression. Surgery is performed in severe cases.
