Dr. Charles Gatt Participates in Research in Restoring the Meniscus

Dr. Gatt

Dr. Charles Gatt of UOA and Chair, Department of Orthopaedics, UMDNJ, is taking part in tissue engineering research, along with Dr. Michael Dunn, Associate Professor and Director, Orthopaedic Research Laboratories. The doctors are working as part of a collaboration between University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and the Armed Forces Institute for Regenerative Medicine. This work group is led by Rutgers and the Cleveland Clinic and is exploring if regenerative medicine can restore both the appearance and function of injured people.

Drs. Gatt and Dunn are the pioneers in creating a weight-bearing scaffold to facilitate the body’s repair of the meniscus, which in a healthy knee absorbs the shock between the femur and tibia when bending the leg. A “rebuilt” meniscus can help restore function in an injured knee.   View Full Magazine Article
