Description: The 33rd Annual Howard Rosen Memorial Tri-State Trauma Symposium is a day-long event aimed at informing orthopaedic trauma surgeons around the New York tri-state area about the newest innovations, treatment modalities, and practice guidelines. Controversies within trauma treatment have arisen due to recent literature either questioning the “status quo” of treatment for these injuries or advances in better treatment methods. Using a case controversy format, expert speakers will debate, for or against, a specific treatment option, including operative vs. non-operative treatment of distal radius fractures in patients over 70 years of age; limb salvage vs. amputation for the mangled extremity; medical vs. surgical approaches in the treatment of non-unions; functional outcomes in plating vs. nailing of peri-trochanteric fractures. In addition, this program will include a roundtable discussion with a panel of orthopaedic traumatologists discussing their approach to presented fractures to illustrate different options in the treatment of the same injury. There will also be didactic lectures on specific topics such as the effects of long-term bisphosphonate use on femoral fracture risk, the evolving treatment of injuries to the ankle syndesmosis and discussion on what constitutes an orthopaedic emergency.
