Eric Nolan: Back in the Cage After Hand Surgery at UOA

Eric Nolan’s journey back to the MMA cage began with a painful and unexpected setback when he fractured his right thumb during a match earlier this year. However, thanks to the expertise of Dr. Christopher Doumas and the team at University Orthopaedic Associates (UOA), Eric is back to fighting again and recently secured a victory by knockout.
The Injury That Put Eric’s Career on Hold
Eric’s thumb injury occurred in the first round of an intense MMA fight. “I knew immediately it was broken,” Eric shared. “The pain was unbearable, and I couldn’t move my hand at all.” For a fighter who relies on precision and strength, this was a huge setback.
When Eric consulted Dr. Doumas at UOA, he was diagnosed with a severe Rolando’s fracture, a complex and fragmented break at the base of the thumb. As Dr. Doumas explained, “This type of injury requires surgical intervention to restore the thumb’s function and structure. The goal was to get Eric back to full strength so he could return to doing what he loves.”
A Seamless Surgical Experience
Reflecting on the process, Eric said, “The staff made me feel comfortable, and when I woke up, my hand was fixed. It was a relief knowing I was in such capable hands.”
Dr. Doumas used advanced surgical techniques to stabilize the fracture and make sure it could heal correctly. Post-surgery, Eric was fitted with a brace instead of a traditional cast, which allowed him to start rehabilitation faster. This decision, combined with Eric’s dedication, expedited his recovery.
Recovery Fueled by Discipline
As a Marine and professional athlete, Eric’s discipline played an important role in his recovery. “At first, I was nervous about using my hand again,” Eric admitted. “But I trusted Dr. Doumas and followed all of his recommendations. Slowly, I regained my confidence and strength.”
Dr. Doumas was equally impressed with Eric’s progress. “Eric’s motivation and commitment were exceptional. While many patients might take five or six months to recover fully, Eric was back to training in just three months,” he said.
With the help of tailored physical therapy and a rehabilitation plan, Eric worked tirelessly to regain full mobility and strength in his hand. He pushed through the challenges, driven by his promise to his Marine brothers to make it to the UFC.
Returning to the Cage
Just six months after his surgery, Eric stepped back into the MMA cage. In Philadelphia, he delivered a knockout performance, solidifying his return to the sport he loves. Eric said that it “proved that the surgery worked and that my hand is as strong as ever.”
Eric’s journey shows the expertise and care provided by UOA. “I highly recommend Dr. Doumas to anyone dealing with an injury,” Eric shared. “He truly cares about your recovery, whether you’re an athlete, a veteran or anyone needing help. My experience at UOA was outstanding from start to finish.”
