Football Injury Update – Episode 25: Earl Thomas

Dr. Kayiaros

There were over 140 total plays in the Carolina v Seattle game on Sunday night. Of all those plays, one play mattered. Just one play.

The Seattle Seahawks may have pounded Cam Newton and his team under the bright lights and glamor of national TV on Sunday night, but it was the other Kam that may have had the most regrets. Seahawk’s strong safety Kam Chancellor collided with teammate, Earl Thomas, at full speed.

They both went up for a pick in the second quarter, and Thomas’s shin struck Chancellor’s knee so hard that he fractured his tibia.

The tibia is the larger and stronger of the two bones that make up the shinbone and, as one of our trauma surgeons and joint replacement specialists, Dr. Stephen Kayiaros, discussed on WFAN, surgical intervention is not always necessary. However, Thomas can expect a six-month rehabilitation time before he can return to the field of play.

We have partnered with WFAN 660 AM/101.9 FM to bring you the weekly Football Injury Update, a recap of the top injuries across the NFL with our doctors providing their expert medical opinion on the injury, treatment options and prognosis to return to the field of play. The Football Injury Update will air each Thursday and Friday on Mike Francesa’s show between 1:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
