Football Injury Update – Episode 28: Melvin Gordon

bechler

The Chargers headed into week fourteen with an astonishing nineteen players on injured reserve. Melvin Gordon was not about to become lucky number twenty … or was he?  Gordon was injured midway in the first quarter while trying to recover a Philip Rivers fumble as taking a hit to the back by Carolina linebacker, Thomas Davis.

Melvin Gordon was having a very promising sophomore season. Leading into the game versus the Panthers, he totaled 997 yards, 10 rushing touchdowns and 2 catches for TD’s. San Diego looked like they found their running back of the future. This future could be in jeopardy if Gordon is allowed to return to the field of play too early.

Gordon is three yards shy of 1000 for the season, a goal of many running backs at the start of the season. Gordon has been diagnosed with a hip strain and, as Dr. Jeffrey Bechler discussed on WFAN, could keep him sidelined. It will be interesting to see if Gordon is able to return for at least one play in the regular season to achieve this milestone. Though one play is all it takes to be sidelined for the season.

We have partnered with WFAN 660 AM/101.9 FM to bring you the weekly Football Injury Update, a recap of the top injuries across the NFL with our doctors providing their expert medical opinion on the injury, treatment options and prognosis to return to the field of play. The Football Injury Update will air each Thursday and Friday on Mike Francesa’s show between 1:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
