UOA Welcomes Dr. Aman Dhawan

Board certified orthopaedic surgeon Aman Dhawan, MD, joins University Orthopaedic Associates on August 15 and will be based at UOA’s Monmouth County office. Dr. Dhawan specializes in sports medicine and shoulder care and brings surgical expertise in the latest technologies and evidence-based treatments for ligament reconstruction, meniscal pathology, hip arthroscopy including labral repair, complex cartilage reconstruction of the knee and shoulder, arthroscopic labral and rotator cuff repair of the shoulder as well as shoulder arthroplasty.

These are top priorities for me, and few practices anywhere in the United States can match this eminence,” says Dr. Dhawan. “I am honored to be a part of this team of elite orthopaedic specialists.”

Dr. Dhawan possesses impressive credentials in the areas of sports medicine and shoulder and his training and experience have enabled him to care for people of all ages and at all levels of sports participation, from children and weekend warriors to high school, collegiate and professional athletes. He was a former Associate Team Physician for the NBA’s Chicago Bulls and the MLB’s Chicago White Sox. Additionally, he provided medical care to the U.S. Hockey League’s Chicago Steel and the Big East Conference’s DePaul University. In 2008, Dr. Dhawan received the Arthroscopy Association of North America’s Advanced Arthroscopy Traveling Fellowship Award. In 2009, Dr. Dhawan was honored as an American Orthopaedic Association’s Emerging Leader selection.
“Having been a lifelong athlete myself, with surgeries on both knees, I know first hand what it is like to be an orthopaedic patient,” he notes. “I treat each and every patient with the compassion, excellence and attention to detail that I would want for me or my family.”

Dr. Dhawan previously served as Assistant Professor of Surgery at F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine/Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MA, and Staff Orthopaedic Surgeon and Director of Graduate Medical Education for Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center in Fort Hood, TX. He served 11 years on active duty in the U.S. Army, earning numerous accolades including two Army Achievement Medals, an Army Commendation Medal and two Meritorious Service Medals, including one “for exemplary performance of duty providing unparalleled patient care abilities, professionalism and devotion to soldiers.” Dr. Dhawan was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 2010.

He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and a member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons. Widely published with over 40 peer reviewed manuscripts, book chapters and abstracts in publication, Dr. Dhawan has presented his research at national and international scientific meetings. Dr. Dhawan is a member of the editorial boards of Arthroscopy: The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery and the AAOS Instructional Course Lectures, Sports Medicine 2, and serves as a principal reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine.

After graduating from Albany Medical College, Dr. Dhawan completed his Orthopaedic surgery residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. He was awarded his first Meritorious Service Medal at graduation for outstanding Orthopaedic resident performance. He then went on to complete the prestigious Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Shoulder fellowship at Rush University in Chicago, where he developed his arthroscopic and open surgical expertise in ankle, knee, hip and shoulder joints.

Dr. Dhawan, who is married to a pediatrician and has three young children, enjoys golf, skiing, tennis, softball, hiking and travel during his free time.
