Tenosynovitis (De Quervain’s Tendonitis)

Tenosynovitis occurs when the tendons in the base of the thumb are irritated or restricted. Pain can be felt on the side of the wrist closest to the thumb. Tenosynovitis is caused when swelling of the tendon causes pressure on the sheath that encompasses the tendon, restricting movement and causing pain.

Symptoms

  • Swelling on thumb side of the wrist
  • Catching/snapping sensation felt when moving the thumb
  • Numbness on back of thumb or index finger

Treatment

  • Rest and ice
  • Splinting when necessary
  • Ultrasound
  • Cortisone injections when necessary
