Football Injury Update – Episode 18: Eric Wood
It did not take long for Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor to find the end zone Monday night. The Bills—needing a win to stay afloat in the AFC East—looked strong, sharp and sturdy, ready to dismantle the Seahawk’s offense. But, Russell Wilson and Jimmy Graham had different plans. They worked their magic with perfect timing, accurate precision and dazzling one-handed catches that sent the Bills packing. It was a long flight home to Buffalo for Rex Ryan and his team but even longer for Eric Wood who faced the reality that once again he has suffered a season-ending fracture.
Fortunately for Wood, this time was not as gruesome as the Theismann-like compound fracture he suffered in November 2009. The All-Pro center characteristically regrouped and focused on the future. Putting on a brave (and cheerful) face, he offered his help to the team as they find a permanent replacement. (Wood was so consistent that a backup was not listed on the roster.)
Dr. Carlos Sagebien, one of our orthopaedic trauma surgeons, discusses Wood’s fractured fibula, the surgery to stabilize it, his previous injury and the timetable for Wood to return to the field of play.
