Football Injury Update – Episode 3: Jimmy Garappolo

Monica

New England Patriots’ Jimmy Garoppolo, drafted 62nd in the 2014 draft from Eastern Illinois, finally had his chance to show the NFL and Patriots fans that he is more than a clipboard holder on the sideline. In Garoppolo’s first start, he completed 72 percent of his passes for 264 yards, earning him a Quarterback Rating (QBR) of 73. His quick release, his management in the pocket and his ability to run the offense effectively quieted the critics.

In Week 2 against Miami, Garoppolo was once again putting on a show. The Miami defense, led by Kiko Alonso, was putting pressure on him and, as he scrambled, he was hit and driven into the ground on his shoulder. He left the game immediately and did not return.

Dr. James T. Monica, one of our hand and upper extremity specialists, discusses Garoppolo’s AC joint sprain and how returning to the game and/or playing in the following game is dependent upon the grade of the sprain, as well as the symptoms and pain Garoppolo would be experiencing at the time. Dr. Monica also relates to the toughness that Eli Manning exhibited when he suffered this same injury but returned to the game.
