Resurfacing

Resurfacing procedures can be performed for the knee, hip, or shoulder. These procedures place a metal “cap” over the damaged parts of a joint that rub together, causing pain and stiffness. These smooth metal surfaces function like healthy cartilage by creating a good surface for the parts of the joint to glide over, facilitating movement. These procedures require less surgery and recovery time than total joint replacements; however, resurfacing is not a good option for all patients and is subject to wear that can cause the joint to fail after some time.
