It takes an entire team to save a life, and Dr. Carlos Sagebien and Dr. Timothy Leddy of UOA were recently part of such a team. Jerry Bartolotti was helicoptered into the Level 1 Trauma Center at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in November 2010. Bartolotti suffered severe chest and arm injuries while attempting to make sure his unmanned rolling truck avoided injuring others. After being pinned between a tree and the truck, it was initially believed Bartolotti had little chance of survival.

Sarah Todd had never been even slightly injured in her basketball career, which she began in the second grade and played rigorously, including training, her entire life. But in February, 2012, the 15-year-old was playing a one-on-one drill in practice when she collided with her opponent. She heard a cracking in her knee and fell immediately to the ground. Beyond a dislocated knee cap, an MRI revealed the damage she had suffered: she had also torn her meniscus and ACL (anterior cruciate ligament).
The entire team is just fantastic, really trustworthy and knowledgeable. I was completely reassured after talking with Dr. Kayiaros, and would highly recommend him and UOA to everyone.
He was wonderful from the first moment we saw him. He was an unusual person in that he was honest and true and sometimes you don’t see that in surgeons. He was just a very decent person.
“I’ll take that (UOA) staff over the ER any day!” exclaims Stephen Russell, a 71-year-old from Somerset, New Jersey. That’s exactly what Russell was thinking during the painful 24-hour period after a fall that broke his hip.

He was skilled, accessible and attentive in the hospital, with a great bedside manner.
Everyone at the hospital was wonderful, my physical therapist was outstanding and encouraging, and Dr. Doumas really knew what he was doing. Within a few days of my surgery, I sensed a change for the better and even went on milder pain medication.
He’s a great blend of someone who is highly competent and stays on top of his game. Talking to him is like talking to a friend. The nurses spoke about the implants and techniques he was using and how cutting edge he is. But my body finally feels the way it’s supposed to. The change from last year to now is amazing.
